Our story

Established in 1993 by Alana and Ian Smart to produce premium quality wines of New Zealand.

From a rural upbringing in New Zealand to 12 years living in the UK, travelling extensively (Alana a British Airways stewardess), we enjoyed the cultures of many countries through their food and wine. But we always knew New Zealand was a country with the potential to produce wines that could easily compete on the world stage.

We purchased land on the Martinborough Terrace because of its potential to produce these class wines. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the main plantings, with styles of Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling individual to the site.

Our policy of a "hands on" approach throughout the process from vineyard to final product is essential.

Only fruit from our vineyard is used in our wines, giving us total control of the fruit, grape quality and ultimately the finished produce - the wine.

Vinyard

Situated on the famous Martinborough Terrace, on the north side of Puruatanga Road, the 55 acres of grape land forms a horse shoe shape before a steep drop off the terrace down to surrounding farm land and the Huangarua River.

The rows are set out North/South facing on the gentle North facing slope, giving the vineyard perfect viticulture aspects, optimising all the natural element advantages.

With all the latest imported planting material now well established and attention to detail in canopy and soil management closely following the IWP (Integrated Winegrape Production programme), this will enable the long term sustainability for the vineyard. All this combines to give the vineyard a unique advantage in producing premium quality grapes.
