About Peregrine Wines

Peregrine Wines, Central Otago Peregrine Wines is located in the rugged mountains and lakes of Queenstown, Central Otago, deep in the South Island of New Zealand. Peregrine lies under the snow capped mountains of the region with its vineyards in the valleys below, a continental climate giving the area hot and dry summers with cool nights. Founded and owned by Greg Hay, Peregrine's prime focus is on growing premium Pinot Noir from their estate managed vineyards. These are all meticulously hand tended and farmed under a sustainable philosophy. Peregrine has its vineyards in the two top regions of the area, Gibbston and Cromwell. These areas typically produce intensely flavoured wines of finesse and elegance with the predominantly schist soils adding mineral complexity.

Why Peregrine?

The Peregrine is a falcon that belongs to the same family as our own New Zealand endemic falcon, Falco novaeseelandiae (Karearea).

It is a spectacular bird that thrives amongst rugged mountains, lakes and rivers; a way of life which for us symbolises the essence of our vineyards and wines here in Central Otago. Thus Peregrine as opposed to Flaco novaeseeklandiae. This of course is far too much of a tongue twister in any case and likely to cause endless problems when ordering wine. The Karearea, which appears on the $20 note, is listed as a threatened species but small populations have been located here in Central Otago. All quite symbolic of course, however, what's life if not a challenge? We are proud to be sponsors of the Wingspan Trust of New Zealand, whose mission is to protect and release injured or orphaned raptors. Visit www.wingspan.co.nz

Peregrine Wines is situated at Wentworth Estate, Gibbston Valley on the main route into the tourist region of Queenstown (25 kms away) and is prominently signposted. The cellar door for tasting and sales is open 7 days from 10 -5. This attracts many visitors and is also on the itinerary of several local boutique wine tours.
