In the South Island of New Zealand, Central Otago is a rapidly developing wine growing region, building an international reputation for Pinot Noir.

It is the only area in New Zealand with a semi-continental climate, resulting in greater daily and seasonal extremes of temperature than found elsewhere in the country. Summers are hot and dry with cold nights.

Even rainfall averages 325 to 700 mm a year. The wide diurnal temperature variation intensifies flavour.

The world's southernmost wine region is found in Central Otago, New Zealand, in the same 45 degree latitude as the Burgundy region in France. The award-winning Nevis Bluff Vineyard is in a favoured micro climate on the north facing slopes of the Gibbston valley. The vineyard is sheltered by the dramatic rocky outcrop known as the Nevis Bluff. Hot summer days are balanced by cool nights, ideal for developing intense fruit flavours, characteristic of the area.

In 2001 more than 1,000 hectares of Central Otago land was planted in grapevines, 70 percent in pinot noir. Although many of the vineyards are covered in snow in the winter, the long hot summers with cool night-time temperatures encourage a slow ripening perfect for quality wine production.
