The buildings at Ascension were inspired by the Spanish Mission at San Luis Obispo in California. We were struck by the beauty, timelessness and peace there and wanted to recreate some of that ambience here at Matakana.

The menu at Ascension is based around Mediterranean cuisine. Using fresh, simple ingredients from only the best local suppliers, our Chefs create flavour-packed seasonal dishes to match the wines of Ascension.

Since our establishment, we have commissioned several special pieces for Ascension in an endeavour to support a wide range of arts, continuing a tradition that many winery owners have maintained for centuries. The Matakana & surrounding areas are blessed with talented artisans, and we regularly invite them to make free use of the exhibition gallery above the Tasting Room, which you are welcome to enjoy.

Throughout the year we hold a range of outdoor concerts and dinners featuring everything from opera to comedy, and celebrating such special seasonal events as the harvest. By completing our Ascension mail order form at the front counter, you can keep up to date with these events and with details of new wine releases, as Ascension wines are not widely available.
