Kit-up with hard hat, hi-vis vest and safety glasses and come with us up to New Zealand's newest hardrock gold mine. Currently being mined by Oceana Gold, it's at the Globe just south of Reefton in the middle of Victoria Conservation Park.
This fantastic tour gives you a taste of the past and the present - discover what Reefton would have been like in its early gold rush days, learn how gold was extracted at the Blacks Point gold stamper battery and visit todays gold mining operation surrounded by breathtaking views of the snow capped Paparoa and Victoria Ranges.
At the mine you get to: - Dress like a real miner and go right into the mine itself - Learn how the gold is extracted from the open pit to the processing plant to the smelter - Drive along the haul road to the pit edge to watch the giant excavators load the 92 tonne dump trucks - Climb up and through the processing plant, chat with the crew in the control room and touch the final product from the mine, the 'black gold' - Take a walk through the special beech forest of the area along the old Union Track - Experience the beech forest and wildlife of Victoria Conservation Park
En route you get to: - Take a glimpse of life in Reefton back in the 1870s when men and families came across the world in search of a piece of our gold - Watch how the gold was extracted from the quartz rock in the stamper battery at the Blacks Point Museum - End the tour with a coffee and nibble from the 'seriously shortbread people' at The Broadway Tearooms & Bakery or some billy tea with the colourful Bearded Miners.
