Last year's Craighall, topping off glowing local reviews, was recently ranked 2nd equal in the public tastings of the Australian 'State of Origin' challenge run by Divine Magazine. Competition was tough, with the sixty wines pre-selected to represent classic, consistently top-performing wines from each state. For 2002, unsettled juice pressed from the low-yielding Mendoza clone of Chardonnay was fully barrel fermented, with all barrels warmed to complete malo-lactic fermentation. These techniques bring extra mid palate weight and texture, richness and complexity.
Funky notes are interspersed with tropical fruit, melon and nutty aromas. Toasty, lightly caramelised, biscuity, sizzled butter notes are evident too. Gentle oak is cleverly implanted, giving a seamless, silky smooth quality to this beautifully balanced Chardonnay.
