Viticulture:
These grapes come from a collection of sites stretching from Bay View to Dartmoor. They are on grown on different soils and have different management styles. The vineyards in Dartmoor range from hillside terraces with Poporangi silt loam, which have a clay pan on top of gravels, to Esk sandy loam beside the Tukituki River.
Winemaking:
The grapes were pressed and the juice lightly settled before being pumped to barrels for fermentation using both cultured and indigenous yeasts. Once the fermentation was complete the cellars were warmed and the new wine underwent malolactic fermentation, which softened the acid and added a buttery component to the wine. The individual vineyard parcels were kept separate until October 2001 when we blended and bottled the wine.
Winemakers Comments:
This is a full-bodied Hawke's Bay style. It has aromas and flavours of stonefruit and pears, with hints of butter and oak, from malolactic and barrel fermentation. This wine will continue to gain complexity over the first two years but will offer enjoyment as a young wine.
Food Match:
Seafood and white meat dishes.
