Franz Josef is 1.5 hours drive south from Hokitika and 3.5 hours north of Wanaka. We are located in the Westland National Park which offers some of the most spectacular scenery in the South Island, from the stunning rainforest to the amazing Franz Josef Glacier.
Franz Josef has much to offer all requirements. For those wanting to experience nature first hand, there are guided walks on the Glacier, Heli-Hikes, nature walks, kayaking, kiwi tours and quad bikes to name a few ....
For those requiring something a little less challenging but still wanting to appreciate the beauty of the area, there are helicopter and fixed wing flights over the Glaciers and Mount Cook, boat cruises on Lake Mapourika or Okarito Lagoon, ice climbing at the new multi million dollar Hukawai centre and to top off the day, a quiet soak in the new Glacier Hot Pool complex set amongst the rainforest.
Then of course Fox Glacier is just 25 minutes south of Franz Josef, where you can take a walk around Lake Matheson, collect driftwood at Gillespies Beach or just sit and enjoy the interrupted views of Mount Cook and Mount Tasman.
