Begin the day with an unforgettable overview of Auckland from the top of One Tree Hill, one of Auckland's most prominent landmarks. One Tree Hill is actually an extinct volcano that last erupted 100,000 years ago, and provides wonderful 360 degree panoramas of the city and surrounds.
After stopping at One Tree Hill, we drive on to The Waitakere mountains, only 30 minutes away. The Waitakere mountains separate Auckland from the sparsely populated wilderness of the West Coast.
The Waitakere ranges provide a wild sanctuary for giant Kauri forest and native bird life. Kauri forests evolved during the Jurassic period (between 190 and 135 million years ago) and are among the most primitive on earth. Today, Kauri trees can live to 2000 years, becoming spectacularly massive as they age.
On the drive west you will pass by a lush regenerating rainforest canopy, which extends from sheer walled mountains and valleys to the shores of the wild Tasman sea. Giant cliffs, over 200 meters in height stand watch over the sea, and provide awe inspiring natural lookouts.
Arriving at Piha, take an easy walk through verdent coastal rainforest to a magnificent cascading waterfall. Afterwards, explore Piha or Karekare beaches, two of New Zealands most spectacular. Here your guide can point out many of the plants and bird species that are unique to New Zealand.
We arrive back in Auckland city at 5:30 pm
